For those just starting out, would simply getting products listed with search engines be enough to bolster sales? Any internet advertising tips for all of us struggling to keep the doors open would be much appreciated.

I'd say get knowledgeable about using PPC or Yahoo marketing. It's not that difficult, you just need to make your website attractive to search engines and provide ads with good keywords in them. Your ideally looking for campaigns or organic traffic. The keyword itself is vital.
