7up was called the "un-cola" – this allowed consumers to relate 7up as a soda, but something cool enough not be a cola. This drove 7up sales through the roof and put it ahead of sprite.
Don't be a company you're not. Avis said "go with us because we're #2" – this drove sales through the roof. When they went back to saying theyre #1, this strategy knocked their strategic vision.
